I adopted Slater from BTRET (he was in Marlana's Sanctuary) back in October... last week we took him with us all the way to Maine to visit my family. My mom used to teach at a small Christian school; she wanted to show off her new grand dog to her little kids! So we took him for a visit. Slater was wonderful around the kids - he just laid right down and let them give him some belly rubs (of course), and even doled out a few kisses to some lucky recipients. At one point I swear he almost fell asleep. He was lovin' it, and loving them.
Thanks to Marlana and BTRET for taking Slater under your wing until we found him! He is one amazing dog who doesn't let his blindness slow him down one bit.

Her owner committed suicide and this dog and a mama dog and pup were alone in the house with him for an unknown amount of time.    I got her in mid October.    Her weight had dropped from 15 lb to 11 lb. – she looked like skin over bones.     I thought putting weight on her and clearing up the bilat.   Pneumonia was my biggest worry and then the seizures started.     The vet said he had suspected distemper early on but thought she should have never lived that long.

I  did “intensive care nursing” on this doxie from Clayton Co for 8 wk.   She was at my house with a jugular IV line at one point, several times on an (arm) IV on an IV pump.    She was too sick to leave at a vet office overnight so they sent her home with me.    Finally the last 3-4 days of her life she started having seizures uncontrollably.     Diagnosis finally – distemper.

I am beyond devastated.    I go to pick up her ashes this week.      Rescue can really break your heart

Inge called.  They found Sammy Davis Jr. passed away in his crate this afternoon.   Nothing to suspect anything other than he was a heartworm survivor.   He was found at Nashville's Metro shelter, alone and scared.   He was said

to be very dog aggressive but as it turns out, he was just scared of other dogs and was a model Boston at the Irby house.

Earlier that morning we learned we'd lost little Gracie Poopie, the first of Noel Star's poopies.  Maybe Sammie left early, to show them the way.

I also suspect that we cherish dogs because their unblemished souls make us wish - consciously or unconsciously - that we were  innocent as they are, and make us yearn for a place where innocence is universal and where the meanness,

the betrayals, and the cruelties of this world are unknown.            ~           Dean Koontz, A Big Little Life: A Memoir of a Joyful Dog

We took in a momma Boston and her soon to be babies a couple weeks ago, didn't know anything about her other than she'd been a breed dog all her life, in a puppy mill.

Something when wrong, no idea what, no history, nothing.   She lost all six of her babies, one by one.

There are six more little angels, The mothers name is Noel Star and the babies' names are:

Rudi Netwon
Frankie Nelson
Jasper Nathan
Gracie Noel

Ray said - Mr Zeus is doing great and so is Buddy.  Both are spoiled rotten.

Buddy likes to be outside more then the others and will play deaf til he is ready to come in.  Funny, for a dog I felt would be hard to place everyone fusses over him.  He has his routine and I dont think he would like being around

kids and likes hanging around with the other two.

Hi Marlana,

How are you doing?

Hope you had a nice Thanksgiving. I can't believe how fast time is going. It's going to be a year since we got Roscoe. He is doing fine except he doesn't like the cold weather. Oh well, I don't like it either!  I have a couple of pics

from Roscoe. He is funny and just graduated from his intermediate class. We are grateful to have Roscoe in our lives.  Will send more Xmas pics. later.

Hope all is well with you, your granny and the boston friends.

Take Care

We're saddened at the loss of Mr. Haddix Haus, a sweet little man.    He apparently had a brain tumor, more and more common in Bostons for some reason.   His foster momma Michelle shares our sadness but

this little man is once again a Boston angel, just in time for Christmas.

We're saddened at the recent loss of a couple old gentlemen pulled from Florida shelters and given a chance to be Boston Terriers.  Jasper Bruce  was a 13 yr. old and blind taken from shelter in January and placed in a good

foster home to rest until he was ready to go to the Bridge.

Mr. Champ Bruce had a hard time getting around, but he had special buds willing to help and sometimes the best thing was just to lay down across a good buddy.

Hi Lark,

It's nice to hear from you. Mackie is doing well! He has made lots of new friends here in Bloomington, as he has met all of our friends here. And since a lot of our friends have dogs, he has been able to make lots of new doggy friends!

We also took Mackie up to our families' homes in South Bend for Thanksgiving.  Both of our families have dogs (my parents have two other Boston Terriers, my brother has a Boston Terrier, and Dan's parents have two labs). He got along very well with all of the dogs, but Mackie became very good friends with my brother's dog especially (my brother's dog cried when Dan and I left with Mackie!)

He seems to really like living in vibrant downtown area of Bloomington with us, as he's been really social on our walks and really likes to explore. He is still not the best at walking on the leash but he is getting better!  He's also been a great study buddy (he likes to lay in his bed next to my desk or lay on the couch next to me while I study).

We got him set up at the vet and ordered all of his medicine for the next year.  He really likes our vet here (he jumped on her and licked her face all over, haha) so we are very happy that it's a good fit.

And of course, he's been spoiled rotten by sleeping in bed with us every night (he likes to steal my spot when I am up late studying) and snoozing on the bed in the sunlight when I am gone at class.

We've all been so happy thus far, and Dan and I feel very blessed that he had foster parents like you guys, because he's been so great to us.  I hope you enjoy the pictures!

best,

steph, dan, and mackie

Some new pics from a very special little guy, Louis Hamilton, and the story, related by our Sharon Scott....

Joe got a call from a gal who had been given a puppy from a breeder that had problems walking. The lady felt bad for him and knew the breeder would kill him.

After a few weeks she realized that she could not give him the care he needed due to financial reasons but she loved him and his spirit. Joe then sent out an email to us all asking for help with a foster or adopter.

I called my friend Sheila who I had placed a beagle with (from Joanne @ Paws New England) that had been shot in the spine and left in a ditch for dead. Sheila had taken the beagle to physical therapy, hydro therapy, acupuncture and God knows what else as well as get her a wheelchair! I knew Louis needed a miracle like Sheila had given the beagle. (The beagle now can walk a little without wheels!)

So I sent the pics and info about Louis to Sheila and there ends the story! It was love at first picture and he too now goes to all these therapies and has wheels. He is doing great and can move without the wheels a little bit too - quite quickly from what Sheila tells me lol Sheila also adapted a 3 wheel bike so she can ride around the neighborhood with the beagle and the boston in tow. She is truly an amazing lady sent by God!
=)
ps: Sheila adopted a deaf boston I was fostering this past year too - Frank Sinatra (icy blue eyes lol)

Merry Christmas again, Mr. Louis Hamilton

This is Noah Clark.   He was dropped off by a loser at the Clayton County GA animal shelter, with parvo.   We rushed up across the state to our great vet, Dr. Tally at Pet Vet Clinic

Michele said Baby worked on walking on a leash today and heeling.  He also met Kiwi and Turbo and I do believe they have met their match.  HOLY COW!  This little guy has been holed up in the den being all pitiful and sweet just biding his time and plotting until he could make it to the holy land - UPSTAIRS!!!!!  Now that he's upstairs this little guy is taking over!

Toys, crates, blankets, EVERYTHING belongs to Baby now.  You think I'm kidding.  Look at this picture I snapped!  That looks says "Hey lady!  ALL THIS IS MINE!!!!!!  Don't cross me!"

Oh boy.  :)

Lark's little girl Miss Priss left for the Bridge last month, a sweet little girl.    She's home now and has since been part of the welcoming party to many other kids.

When we lose one of our kids we grieve but must understand, dogs have souls and we know God loves dogs.    We grieve for ourselves.  Rightly so.

Our destinies are not nearly so secure.

It came to me that every time I lose a dog they take a piece of my heart with them. And every new dog who comes into my life, gifts me with a piece of their heart.

If I live long enough, all the components of my heart will be dog, and I will become as generous and loving as they are.

Beth lost her little man Bandit last month, the little old man Jack Russell who who'd Beth the way to the rescue life.

This is Bandit, and his naptime fire place buddy Fay Dunaway using him for a pillow.

I looked at all the caged animals in the shelter, the cast-offs of human society. I saw in their eyes love & hope, fear & dread, sadness & betrayal and I was angry.

"God" I said, "this is terrible! Why don't you do something?"

God was silent for a moment and then he spoke softly "I have done something.   I created you."

Especially for those of us who've lost a loved one recently, always it seems more likely during these holidays, here's a little something most of us discover we've known all along....

Death is nothing at all.

I have only slipped away into the next room.

I am I and you are you.

Whatever we were to each other,

That we still are.

Call me by my old familiar name.

Speak to me in the easy way

Which you always used.

Put no difference in your tone.

Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow.

Laugh as we always laughed

At the little jokes we enjoyed together.

Play, smile, think of me, pray for me.

Let my name be ever the household word

That it always was.

Let it be spoken without affect,

Without the trace of a shadow on it.

Life means all that it ever meant.

It is the same that it ever was.

There is absolutely unbroken continuity.

Why should I be out of mind

Because I am out of sight?

I am waiting for you,

For an interval,

Somewhere very near,

Just around the corner.

All is well.

Donna,
Just wanted to let you know that Greg, Harvey, and I found a new home in Minnesota.  Harvey is doing well.  He likes all the parks to run in and surprisingly really likes snow and his new puppy sweatshirt.  The attached photo was taken on our first big snow.  We made snow balls and threw them for Harvey to chase.  He really liked the game.
Hope you are doing well,
Tova, Greg, and Harvey

Back in November 2010 Inge pulled a kid from a high kill shelter, he was a unique little kid with an old soul that shown brightly from his eyes.

Inge fell in love with him instantly, Bogie however was hiding a secret. Bogie was just 3 but he was really sick, he was diagnosed with CHF on the right side of his heart which was very enlarged. Inge is not the person to give up that easy on a kid we all know this about her.

She started treatment on Bogie then sent him here in January 2011, I had Bogie for only a short time but he took a piece of my heart. That day when I got him off the PnP flight the airport manager Bob Spera(who I have known most of my life, a good boston family) did something he had never done before he came out to meet the pilot and the dog. I seen Bogie and Bob make eye contact and I knew, but I had to wait to make my move. Bob took pictures of Bogie and walked him while me and James Carney talked. I loaded Bogie up and Bob spoke "I wish my wife Sandy could meet Bogie." I told him I would send her some pictures after Bogie sees our vet.

Four days later the pictures were sent and Bogie was invited for a visit to The Spera home. Bogie fell in love with Sandy and her grandsons instantly. Later that night Sandy put in her application and back to their house I went the next day to deliver their new boy. Bogie fit in like he had been there all along. He went to work every day with Bob, greeting airport visitors and shaking them down for food. The Spera's seen Bogie threw a dangerous round of slow kill for his heartworms, and Bogie was on the mend.

Today dawned normal with no indications something would change today. Bogie went to work with his Dad and Mom went off to teach the kids. Around this evening sometime Bogie was napping on is couch in Bob's office when he suddenly started to vomit and passed away in Bob's arm despite numerous attempts to revive him with CPR. Sandy called me with the news around 6PM this evening.

I cried as she told me and told her I would let Inge know, God I dreaded telling her but found the courage. I know Bogie is at the bridge now with his Big Brother Bailey. He will be there to me and Inge and his family when it is our time. Awhile back I made Bogie the mascot for Boston Air, he will remain in that position in memory of all those who have real wings now.

Bogie has his own wings, again.   My suspicion is that pilots carrying dogs, especially Bostonians, will sense an added presence around the cabin flying over and into that special field in Virginia.

The Boss didn't give Bogie a lot of time but dogs don't need a lot of time to leave us with a special gift and memories.   They're still with us, little spirits we sense now and then.

My house is full of them.

Hi Joe,
Its been a while, i still email Donna from time to time. Actually ran into Renee  while camping at Stone Mountain back in October. I love to read Giddys page, i check it out monthly. Makes me so happy to see all the pups with new homes but so very sad for those who have lost theirs. I read them all though as if i had known them. Guess even though i don't know them i know the extreme mix of emotions that comes with loosing your best 4 legged kid.
Anyway, we picked up a small camper and have been on 2 trips so far, pups in tow of course. They were a little confused why were staying in this little box but now camp like pros.
Winston just turned 3 last weekend and Wrigley had a birthday a few weeks before that. they have become the very best of friends and spend hours running after each other and playing.
Attached a few recent pictures. Thanks again for all you and all the folks involved with the rescue do, you have helped to fill a void in my heart for my beloved Tyka. her spirit lives on in these two great guys.

Hi Joe, how's it going?  All is well here.  Ms. Kitty is just so smart and learns very quickly.  She now not only goes to her rug to sit when people come in and out of the door, but when on the leash to go out, she sits and waits until I say 'OK', regardless if I'm standing in the house or open the door and stand outside. She's also getting very good about sitting at the curb to wait for the OK to cross the street.  Such a sweetie.   That said..... she is the biggest CHOW HOUND I've ever seen, she would eat 24/7 given the opportunity and she's never met a food she doesn't like.... regardless of its freshness or appropriateness.

She also has her own "Kitty's Most Wanted" list, Squirrels are on the Public Enemy #1 list, followed by the hated chipmunk and a long list of any other uninvited wildlife that decides to come out of the woods and wander into HER yard.  This morning she lost her mind over a red fox.  Even birds are not safe around the feeder once the back door is opened for her to go out and play, they scatter like marbles hit by a steely.

Hope you have a great Thanksgiving.  We are very thankful for all you do for the Boston's of our lives.

Take care,

Lin & Ralph

Oliver was many things to me, my sleeping partner, my car ride buddy but most of all he was the one who healed my broken heart. Time and time again he stepped in to heal my heart that had been broken when a kid left me for the bridge.   He sat by me as I held his sister Dolly in my arms minutes after she passed away, I cried and screamed and he did the same.   He would not let her be taken from my arms, till I was ready for her to be. He kept me company when I was unable to leave the bed due to my back, he protected me fiercely even when he knew those that were around were not hear to harm me.   When I had to leave him at home, I got told off when I came back.

He would bark at me till I picked him up for him to give me kisses and hug my neck. There was days he got on my last nerve with his goofy stuff, but it was soon forgotten. I feel in love with him from just a small picture Joe sent me back in July 2009, I went 3 days later to get him. I cannot being to express how much I love and miss him. I think of him so many times per day, and each night I look forward to his visit. Each day my heart hurts a little less for I have some quilt in the way he passed.

But I know he is okay now and someday we will be together again. And in that I found comfort and pain for I wish to be with him and all my babies but I know my job here is not done. For I now Oliver is now a Sanctuary Angel who will be finding those special kids that need me and making sure they find their way here. I will know who he send, sometimes it takes me a few days to know which angel send the new kid.

I know he is in good hands. So Oliver, when you are ready, find me another kid that needs The Sanctuary. And remember Ollie Momma loves you more every day and misses you more than she can say. You are loved and missed by those here.

Love Momma, Nanna, Grampie, Hoss, Shelby, Daisy, Grannie, Molly and all the angels you knew before, now your best buds

I'm saddened to report the loss of Larry James, a little guy who was found begging for food in Knoxville.

Larry came into the rescue in Maryville but it was clear pretty quickly that there was more going on with him than just being hungry.   Larry had cancer and was just looking for someone to take him home.

I just wanted you to know God still has a little plans for me

I think he sent me to watch over you

I think he send me here to show you how there are still miracles happening everyday

He sent me here to show others to never count us out, many do not understand how we stay herein pain and suffer the way we do.

But we do it for a reason you see, we hope to change the minds and hearts of man so they might see more value in us not as a money making venture but someone to grow old with and laugh at our

funny little antics.

To love us for what we are not what we can be sold for. So many of us die everyday in shelters never knowing what we did wrong.

Simply our families are to busy to bother with us anymore. They dump us then forget about us but we never forget them.   Even if we do get a new home with a great family we still wonder.

But we never have to wonder why our foster families love us, they love us for simply being ourselves.

They heal our wounds both those that are seen and unseen. They teach us how to trust and learn to play.

And take joy in the simple things. So that is why God leaves us here for you to heal our hearts, minds and body.

And for us to teach you how big your heart really is.

Love, Larry

Now and then something very special happens and a little dog wanders into somebody's life.   Such was the case with Daisy Mae, a little Boston Terrier English Bulldog mix when she was literally saved from death by Steph and her

family.   Miracles happen.

Ms Daisy received some mail today, she was very excited and could hardly wait until it was opened!  To our surprise and delight, she has a new cape.  She is sitting on the bed with the love of her life, my daughter, Beth, in these pics

wearing her new cape.

Once upon a time there were five grandfather Boston Terriers, big Bostons who all showed up about the same time and helped to found the rescue in the very early years.   All passed away over the years, the last Mr. Suds Green who

was lost for a time, but then found.   After Sud's passing, another little guy wandered into Sud's family's life, his name is Bubba Gump.   No doubt Bostons have souls and Mr. Suds Green too lives in Bubba's heart.

Mr. Cedric Johnson has been adopted and the little man now lives in Johnson City, TN with his daddy Harry and the family.   Cedric is a lost little man who was taken in by a local vet and then a good foster family who waited

patiently until just the right family came along.    He's a happy little guy now, and he's quit jumping fences.

We're very pleased to announce that Mr. Dutch McGee has been adopted and the little man lives with his momma in Plam Harbor, FL.

Dutch seems to have adopted into a fire fighting family, no doubt a perfect match for his little red coat.   We're hoping for new pics.
