Any time of the year Heat Stroke can quickly kill a dog

NEVER leave them in cars unattended

DON'T leave them outside when it's hot and

DON'T leave spilled antifreeze when doing automobile maintenance.

Just a teaspoon can kill a dog.  Use the new stuff that tastes bad if you can find it !!!!!!

Don't forget it's also Bee and Wasp time most of the year and a sting can literally kill a Boston Terrier.  Be sure to have Benadryl on hand in case you need it!

Here's some more on Heatstroke in dogs

It can KILL or VERY SERIOUSLY HARM THEM PERMANENTLY!

Important Notices for Spring and Summer

Hot Weather and Pets Summer Tips:

It's That time of the year when the air is dry and your dog may be miserable

For Happy eyes for dogs:

Use 1 or 2 drops of Equate  (or an  equivalent brand) gentle lubricant eye drops in each eye of an older dog once or twice each day.  Check the back panel of any brand for "Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose 0.3%"  That's the correct lubricant.

You can also check Fannie Mae's website for more potential options at Fannie Mae

~

IT'S ALWAYS YELLOW JACKET, WASP and BEE TIME!!!

When yellow jackets and other nasty bugs become particularly mean and many Bostonians (as well as Boxers and other short snouted dogs) are often very badly affected by a sting. If your pooche shows bad facial swelling, especially around his or her muzzle, redness and/or appears to be scratching at or biting at it's feet, you must move very quickly or the results could be very, very bad.

Don't take ANY chances!

Our advice (unless you're sure you know what you're doing) is to get the dog to the vet ASAP!! You can also ask your vet now about keeping some Benadryl (or the less expensive generic version Diphenhydramine HCl in 25 mg caps) handy in the case of an emergency.

If we see any indication of a yellow jacket sting, e.g., rapidly swelling muzzle and face, licking feet, etc, we give the dog ONE caplet in a piece of cheese immediately and start watching it carefully, planning a trip to the vet if there's no quick improvement, but you need to be talking to your own vet now.

Crate Training 101

Here is some very simple but extremely important information for crate training your Boston from Donna Farmer of Birmingham Boston Terrier Rescue

The dog needs to have good experiences with the crate to start with - feed him there, keep his toys there, give him treats in there, and interact with him while in the crate. Then address the loading into crate problem.  Some folks have found with Benadryl to expedite the procedure, let him go into the crate for something he wants (treat/ toy/ food) and praise him, stand near.

Then do it again, but closer, maybe touching him as a brush up with the leg. Then do it some more. Next, do it with a leash/collar on. Then try to do it by hand, gently. Keep doing this with a med like Benadryl (your vet can tell you how much and how often) so he's less likely to have the energy and general snottiness to snap. Then start doing it slowly do it without the Benadryl.  Gradual desensitization is the key.

The steps can vary as needed, but it is about starting slowly, safely and slowly introducing the dog's natural fears back into the training while he's distracted by the   Benadryl so that the repeated experiences are not negative and not frightening.

Eventually, he will recall the recent and good experiences with being put in a crate.

It's not an overnight solution, but this is the form of behaviour modification that works best for dogs! The meds aren't always necessary, but they usually make it easier for everyone, especially the pooch. If at any point, the dog starts back to old behaviour, go back to the last working step and do it over and over again and then move forward again, maybe even finding another stair step of progression in between them!

It takes thought, work and much patience, but it is the thing that usually always works!  Ask your Rescue for other hints and read as much as you can.

If You Need to Surrender Your Dog

If you have a Boston Terrier for whom you can no longer care, contact us at 865.983.3272 or email us at info@bostonterriertn.org instead of taking your dog to a shelter or call the Boston Terrier rescue nearest you.

Once at a shelter an "owner surrender" dog is typically euthanized (killed) within three days and in some cases, within the same hour depending on overcrowding.

Waiting 'till the last minute to call a rescue is NOT a good idea for the dog.

You must have the dog up to date on shots and vet records available to us.  We are all volunteers and we survive on donations, volunteers and charity.  Many times people call, ask for help and then disappear.   It wastes valuable time and if you call, it's YOUR responsibility stay keep in communication if you want our help.

If you really want help your dog, you're going to have to communicate and do it promptly with all the materials we ask you to send or we simply won't be able to help

More than 1/3 of the nearly 8 million dogs annually euthanized in the United States are dumped there by their "protectors," the people they trusted, their owners and families.  The chances of them being adopted are slim.

A dog dies every eight seconds in a shelter somewhere, scared and waiting desperately to be saved by somebody, anybody.  Most of them don't even have names anymore.

With these staggering numbers, every time a puppy or kitten is purchased at a pet store, or from a back yard breeder or at a flea market, an older dog or cat or a litter of pups or kittens somewhere gets a death sentence.  It's not just inhumane, it's shameful to profit from killing.

For Adoption of those VERY SPECIAL Boston Terriers:

DO NOT believe what they tell you in pet stores about small dogs and small children!!!

Bostons generally do NOT do well with young children.  We'll be glad to discuss this with you but you need to know this is a big concern upfront for us.

Or, Here's the Shortcut Below Directly to Our Beautiful Kids

Please keep in mind, we have foster parents and adoptable Boston Terriers in Tennessee, Virginia, Georgia, North and South Carolina and we have sister Rescues in these as well as many other states as well.

Even if you're not quite ready to adopt a Boston of your own, you can help a great deal for medical procedures for sick and injured Bostonians with a special gift for a little dog, many of whom are too old or too sick to be adopted.

Checks are always appreciated in any amount and if you're interested, please call or email us for more information.

Some people aren't able to adopt but do enjoy sponsoring dogs. Without donations and sponsors, we are limited to how much we can help these poor little souls.

Rescue has also become a sanctuary for older, sick, disabled or otherwise "un-adoptable" dogs.  We have many living happily in foster homes who're being made possible by your kind support.

They don't need to be a special needs dog to need a sponsor. All dogs need sponsors and somebody special in their life.  Dogs need families too and they'll never let YOU down.

I Remember

I stood by your bed last night, I came to have a peep.
I could see that you were crying. You found it hard to sleep.

I whined to you softly as you brushed away a tear,
"It's me, I haven't left you, I'm well, I'm fine, I'm here."

I was close to you at breakfast, I watched you pour the tea,
You were thinking of the many times your hands reached down to me.

I was with you at the shops today. Your arms were getting sore.
I longed to take your parcels, I wish I could do more.

I was with you at my grave today, You tend it with such care.
I want to re-assure you, that I'm not lying there.

I walked with you towards the house, as you fumbled for your key.
I gently put my paw on you, I smiled and said "It's me."

You looked so very tired, and sank into a chair.
I tried so hard to let you know, that I was standing there.

It's possible for me to be so near you everyday.
To say to you with certainty, "I never went away."

You sat there very quietly, then smiled, I think you knew...
in the stillness of that evening, I was very close to you.

The day is over... I smile and watch you yawning
and say "Good-night, God bless, I'll see you in the morning."

And when the time is right for you to cross the brief divide,
I'll rush across to greet you and we'll stand, side by side.

I have so many things to show you, there is so much for you to see.
Be patient, live your journey out... then come home to be with me.
